Great Aunt Anna Lotito was a child's dream aunt on many a Sunday afternoon in the home of her mother-in-law, my Great Grandma Phyllis Lotito in Lyons NY. In her gentle and kind way she turned an afternoon of visiting and eating with older relatives all about the children in house; my younger brother, sister and me; the children of her niece by marriage.
In a time before anyone traveled with personal hand held electronics, when one black and white TV with three channels dominated the living room and entertained the men with football, and the radio in the front sitting room was an antique of mystery, Aunt Anna would pull our her handkerchiefs or paper and scissors to create dolls, dogs, and snowflakes usually connected by a careful twist of the blade. Together we would name our freshly carved playmates and engage in multiple chapters of imaginary play in a single afternoon. Just as one might feel a bit bored our play world was reinvented by the addition of a new yarn doll or a paper hat. Her hands and love for creating were amazing!
In the past year I wrote to Aunt Anna and shared photos of my own family along with one of my mother, her niece, and my now adult siblings. To my great delight she wrote back and enclosed a photo of herself sitting as I always knew her, impeccably groomed with two little girls at her side playing with handkerchiefs. In beautiful long hand few children practice today, she wrote " ...you certainly brightened my day. I have such pleasant memories of our family gatherings especially with Uncle George I miss him so much. It's tough outliving many loved ones and dear friends... "
As Aunt Anna will surely be surrounded by all those she longs to be near again may each of us carry on her grace, sincerity and enthusiasm for creativity in all that we do.
With love always, Kathy DeVito Cohen
