I just found out today and am heartbroken. Horst took me under his wing when I was 15. He taught me so much. Thank you.
Rest in peace my stepdad.

I met Horst a little over 32 years ago. I was a young college kid. I was introduced by the Bern's. Everytime Horst was around he would make us laugh, and he always was a joy to be around. I'm saddened by his loss. I thank you for the wonderful memories I had with you.
Rest in peace! Love to all!

A great man and friend. Spent many hours in his shop discussing current events, listening to stories of his experiences or talking about processing optical glass. - Landy Atkinson, Gradient Lens Corporation

So many memories and so many emotions. We've known Horst for a little over 40 years and he was a part of our family for 34 of those years. He and Mama were companions and each found support, friendship and love in one another. They were the perfect travel companions and saw the world. Life is never without its' trials and tribulations and as many couples do, they had their trying times, but toughed it out. She is infinitely saddened by the loss of her companion and already struggles with the fact that he won't be there to tuck her in at night. Her heart is broken again.
I was privileged enough to work for Horst for over 10 years and both Matthew and Danielle grew up at Planar Optics. Matthew and Danielle had three grandfathers. One they never met, one that suffered from Parkinson's and one they knew as Opa Horst with whom they shared many trips, birthdays, parties and life's milestones. For me, I am grateful that I knew him and at the depth that I knew him. So many conversations. He will always be in my heart and a part of my being. I feel the void.
We all know that Horst was an incredibly hard worker. It gave him solace and purpose. I hope that he has found peace and that he and Wolfgang are paddling on still waters. Till we meet again - Lots of Love, Helmi and Denise

A wonderful man and I am blessed to call him my friend. A wealth of knowledge and history. I love his stories of distress and success. I remember once we took a walk down to the docks and during that walk he said for me to "liebe und beschütze sie" and then afterwards gave me the translation. He said "that's what I do." So I leave those words for family and friends. Always remember the smile, jokes and stories.Prayers of strength, comfort, peace and love to the family.
Our love to you all.
