Lea and Frank were visiting us in Ohio many years ago. The kids had gone out to a movie and we started talking about various things. Lea had always spoke with heavy accent and being born in Bridgeport, CT, it was hard to fathom how that came about.
On a trip to Niagara Falls one year, Lea was stopped by US customs officials as we were reentering the US. Even with her US birth certificate they did not believe her and had to confirm her birth with the authorities in Bridgeport.
Eventually the discussion got around to Lea's life in Italy during World War II. While she was born in Bridgeport she was taken to Italy by her parents when she was just a couple of years old. She started telling us about her life in Italy before the war, then what her family was forced to do during the war to survive.
She painted a picture that was absolutely mesmerizing. Her story started around 10pm and continued straight through until 2am and there was never a dull moment. I was extremely sorry that we did not record the conversation because that would have made a great book.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for Lea and all she endured during her life. May she now rest in peace. Lou and Monie Bordonaro…
