Thoughts about June from her activist friends.
“June arrived to many peace demonstrations and could be counted on as some
one always in solidarity with efforts toward justice in Central America. We need
people like June and I am very sorry for her loss.”

her reliable commitment to the cause of peace, and a refreshing disdain
for the powers that be. This is a sad loss for all of us.”

with whom I went to farm worker meetings once a week. That's where I met
her and maintained a loose relationship over the years. She was always present,
whatever we were engaged in, despite ongoing medical problems. I'm glad I had

“June was a truly committed peace advocate. She protested the
US invasion of Vietnam by refusing to pay taxes so the IRS impounded her car.
She worked at Kodak at the time.”

“I was acquainted with June for years by seeing her at Metro Justice
and Central American solidarity events. I did not really get to know her until a
group of elders formed the “Band of Rebels” in the spring of 2011. We rallied,
on Mondays at noon, in front of banks, the federal building, and other locations.
We opposed the financial elites that created the financial crisis and then
benefited most from the bailout. We advocated for the protection of
Medicare and Social Security. We described ourselves as
grandparents and elders “raising cane” for social justice.
June was one of the most regular demonstrators at these event. I came to enjoy
having quiet conversations with her in between the chants and picketing.
We have lost a number of people who were regulars at these demonstrations.
June is our most recent loss. She will be sorely missed.

In early April 2020, as a Lifespan volunteer to support the agency’s response to COVID-19, I was linked with June, who squeezed in our routine phone call amidst a very busy schedule. Each week, we talked about family, childhood and adolescence, employment and shared interests in reading, music, and keeping current with the news. I admired her ability to read two books at once, something I’ve never been able to do. June’s kindness, generous soul, and commitment to social justice were ever present during our discussions. My heart hurts with June’s passing, though I feel so very fortunate to have known her. Her spirit lives on in our wonderful memories of a lovely lady.

I have many nice memories of June who we affectionately called "Cookie" years ago.
She attended many family picnics at Hamlin Beach State Park and could be counted on to participate in baseball and many games. She was always friendly and interested in what we had to say. This was important to me as a child and in later gatherings as an adult. Her family was important to her, and they looked after her interests as she had health challenges. She will be missed. May she rest in peace. Barb Snell Grady.

I came to know June through a program at Lifespan where I was paired with an elderly person who would like a weekly phone call. I wasn’t sure how this match would go because this person, June, had a very particular time for someone to call her. Out of a whole week she had one half hour open on Monday to talk to me. We started tentatively, but we talked every Monday for maybe two years. I thought it would be a chore, but she was such an intelligent, personable and caring person. I felt that we became friends. Even if she was having a bad day, she took time to get to know me, and cared about me. And she very often had me laughing! What started out as a task to call her became something I looked forward to and from which I benefitted greatly. I am very grateful for the time we had together—and we never met face-to-face!
