Obituary of Domenico Gutta
Domenico “Mimmo” Gutta
Domenico “Mimmo” Gutta, 68, of Irondequoit, NY, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, after a battle with congestive heart failure.
He was born August 10, 1952, in Siderno Superiore, Reggio Calabria, Italy, a beautiful hilltop town along the Mediterranean coast, to parents Giuseppina Lizzi and Giuseppe “Francesco” Gutta. He was the eldest of 4 children. He loved his family and was especially close to his mother. He was a hard worker who enjoyed the simple things in life.
After meeting his beautiful wife Bianca, they were married in 1973 and started their life together in Rochester, NY. He worked as a mason as they raised their three children. He was especially appreciative of his employer, Ralph Antetomaso, who never gave up on him even in difficult times. He developed a close friendship with his fellow coworker John Visconti that lasted long after both men retired.
He enjoyed being outdoors, working on his word search puzzles, feeding ducks and helping his kids on home projects. As a pastime, he enjoyed helping his friend Joe Radicia at Riccardo’s Bakery. He was a generous person who would always go out of his way to help others. Despite not speaking English fluently he made friends everywhere he went. Like the time he befriended his neighbors, Victor and Iris Figueroa, whose first language was Spanish. Despite the language barrier they enjoyed each other’s company. His sense of humor was universal.
The last few weeks were especially difficult for him. But seeing his siblings and their families in Italy via video calls provided a measure of comfort. The family appreciates the kindness of the RGH staff who took good care of him.
Predeceased by his parents; brothers-in-law Francesco Gutta of Italy, Aldo Sirigu and Michele Carteri of New York, Cosimo Giorgione of Italy, Pietro “Joe” Giorgione of Nebraska.
Survived by his devoted wife of 47 years Bianca; children Marisa, Frank and Josie; siblings Salvatore (Graziella) Gutta, Momma Gutta and Rosamaria (Enzo) Fragomeni of Italy; sisters-in-law Maria (Giuseppe) Commisso of Italy, Ada Carteri of New York, Francesca Sirigu of South Carolina, Maureen Giorgione of Nebraska, Tita Giorgione of Italy; brothers-in-law Luigi (Maria) Giorgione, Antonio Giorgione both of New York; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
