Jerry was a terrific Shipmate and crew. He flew with me often as an AUXAIR observer and was absolutely fearless. He was ever the consumate professional in everything he did. He was also an experienced Coxswain and one of the few USCG AUX Coxswains trained and signed off to Coxswain a CG vessel at USCG Station Sodus Point. He would often make me crew for him when he had "The Duty". On one occasion he was Coxswain of the 22'UTL out of Station Sodus Point on a rough evening with me as his crew, we went out to the channel and were drawn to one side near the light house by a group of anxious poeple. A person who could not swim had climbed down the ladder on the side of the pier into the water, had slipped off the last rung which was about 2' above the water, was exhausted from attempting to pull his body weight up the ladder and was in danger of giving up/letting go. Jerry masterfully maneuvered the vsl in the turbulent seas up to an area where we could assist the man onto the lurching vessel. Once he was on board (with a life jacket on)and rested we were able to return him to the pier in a safe manner. Jerry just took this rescue in stride and on we went with our patrol. We will miss Jerry, he enjoyed life and enjoyed giving back whenever he could. He will always be famous for his "Iron Man" races and wins, often besting the younger active duty coastie crews at the Station.
The world is a much better place for the time it had with Jerry Bowe, I will always cherish my memories of the time I had with him.
My very best to his family.
