When I met Nick's eldest daughter, Marianne, almost 4 years ago, one of the first things she told me was that her father was turning 94 and that he was a real pip. When I met him I understood what she meant, and why she called him the Mayor of St. Ann's. I never met anyone who loved life and people as much as Nick did. He seemed to know everyone, and everyone seemed to know and respect him. The more I learned about the life he led, the more I realized how amazing he was. He was full of love, tenderness and overwhelming generosity. His heroic service during the war and his love of country was legendary. We shared a lifelong love of the Yankees, and I regret that I was never able to take him to the new Yankee Stadium. When we took him out to eat he would talk to everyone he passed, and made a point of stopping to rub little children's heads and make them laugh. I am proud to have known him, and to be his son-in-law. I am also proud that he often introduced me to people as his best friend. After my own father, Nick was mine. He will be missed.
