James is pre-deceased by his sister, Martha Grey Wilkerson, daughter Catherine King, son Craig Metchick and former wife Patricia King.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Brenda King; sons James King (Nancy), John King (Alysia), son Jeffrey Metchick (Becka); brother, William O. King (Virginia), Durham, N.C.; 10 wonderful grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
Born 8/13/1928 and raised in Louisburg, NC. At 17, he enrolled at UNC with the intention of becoming an Episcopal Minister. He later changed his mind and decided on Dentistry instead. While he was at UNC he played the trumpet in the marching and concert band, sang in the Men's Glee Club and in the Episcopal Church Choir.
After graduating from UNC, he went to the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dentistry. Upon completion of Dental school, he spent 2 years in the Army Dental Corp in Heidelberg, Germany. Following his tour in the Army he opened a general practice in Pittsboro, NC.
In 1962, he decided to return to UNC and get a Masters Degree in Pediatric Dentistry. From there he was invited to come to Rochester, NY and became Asst. Head of the Pediatric Dental program at Eastman Dental Center where he taught for 7 years. He then decided to open his own practice on Elmwood Ave. in Rochester where he practiced for 40 years. He was a certified board member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a Diplomat of the Board.
Dr. King has taken care of many thousands of children during this period of time and he is certain that the majority of them have healthy teeth and happy smiles.
About Dentistry, he recently said "I was fortunate to have practiced during a period of time when the field of dentistry experienced a revolution."
James was an avid aviation enthusiast and once co-owned his own Cessna airplane which he flew to many parts of the US and Canada. He was a member of the Radio Aero-Modeling Assoc. of Rochester. He was also a long time member of the Rochester Oratorio Society, Brighton Theatre Guild, Pittsford Musicals, Member of Penfield Country Club and Midtown Athletic Club.
Calling hours are from 4-8pm Monday July 20, 2009 at Falvo Funeral Home, Webster location.(1295 Nine Mile Pt. Rd.)
The service will be Tuesday 9:30am at All Seasons Chapel at White Haven Cemetery.
Following the service Shiva will be observed at the family home, 354 Warren Avenue, 14618. Tuesday 2-4pm and 7-9pm and on Wednesday 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
