My journey with Mary began as a child growing up in Brantford, Ontario. The Harmer family had many get togethers where singing and laughter filled their homes. Mary brought a warmth and laughter into our family gatherings that always brought joy and a very strong sense of family to me.
Once Mary and Les and their family made the journey to Webster , New York, as a married adult our paths crossed many times , especially in Mary's role as a teacher.
We were both fortunate to pursue a teaching career and Mary had such a deep love and appreciation for her Waterloo connections she began to plan trips for a select number of her students to tour the Waterloo County area with its German and Mennonite background. It was my privilege and pleasure to help plan some of these trips with Mary to highlight the early history and love of the German language.
Her students were enthusiastic and appreciated Mary's effort to provide them with a very unique and meaningful look back in the early history of Waterloo County.
Then once I was married , and introduced my wife, Wendy to Mary, the two of them began a deep and profound connection that to this day, Wendy still tells me how much she loved Mary.
On one of our visits to Les and Mary's home in Webster, Wendy began to share her love of keeping a journal. Later, Mary was so taken by this conversation that it helped spur her on to write "The Only White Rose".
We have fond memories of attending a number of New Years celebration at the Harmer home and once again music, laughter and love of family and friends filled the rooms. Both Mary and Les always made us feel comfortable and an integral part of their family.
On other visits we would often go on walks and listen to Mary's appreciation of her love of the outdoors.
We had the privilege of attending Mary and Les's fiftieth and sixtieth anniversary and once more the joy of family and friends permeated throughout both celebrations.
Mary had time to send birthday cards to both Wendy and myself as our birthdays are back to back in July.
We both shared a love of the Episcopal/Anglican Church and had the honour of attending services with Les and Mary when we visited them in Webster.
When the first grandchildren appeared on the scene, once again, Mary's love for each one of them abounded.
We have indeed been the richer in our lives to have had many visits and special times with Mary and Les. We count it a very special blessing to have been a part of Mary's life and we will truly miss her.
We extend our love and sympathy to Les and all of Mary's family.
Blessings and love,
Wendy and Gary Cooper
